Puerto Princesa City, the Capital of Palawan
The city of Puerto Princesa is the capital of the Philippine province of Palawan. Although technically a city in Philippine law, to those of us from abroad it is more of a small town. Puerto Princesa is no Manila or Cebu City, so do not be put off by its status as a city if you prefer greenery and a pleasant environment.
As you first come in to land at Puerto Princesa airport, you will be hard pressed to notice the city until you get very close. Tall buildings are not allowed, so there are thankfully no skyscrapers to ruin the view. While there are modern buildings, they are restricted to a height that normally means a maximum of 2 storeys.
Puerto Princesa still has a delightful country air about it, even in the centre of the city proper. As you leave the airport, there are still plenty of large trees to bring shade and to let you know that this is no ordinary city. Even 20 years ago, there were still monkeys in this little part of Palawan that is now called Puerto Princesa city proper. Wherever you are you will have good views of trees, nearby mountains and forests, and sometimes the sea, which is never far away.
The city boundaries make Puerto Princesa one of the largest cities in the Philippines, but that is misleading for those who think of a city as a mass of concrete. The vast area of Puerto Princesa is made up of mountains, forest, and lowland farmland. The city boundaries include the coasts of the Sulu Sea, where the city proper is, and the South China Sea, where Nagtabon is.
